What is artificial grass?

Artificial grass, often called synthetic turf or fake grass, is a surface made of synthetic fibres designed to resemble natural grass. Artificial grass products come in various shapes and sizes and are constructed in a similar way to a carpet. However, it’s far from the carpet installed in your living room. Synthetic turf has evolved significantly since its early development in the 1960s, with new technology offering advancements which have led to improvements in durability and appearance. This has made synthetic turf an attractive option for various applications, including sports arenas, residential lawns, commercial landscapes, and other applications where natural grass may be difficult to grow or maintain.

Artificial grass was primarily developed for use in sports fields and stadiums as a more durable alternative to natural grass, which required extensive maintenance. The first notable application of artificial grass was in the Houston Astrodome, a domed sports stadium in Texas, USA. In 1966, AstroTurf, the first brand of synthetic turf, was installed in the Astrodome, giving rise to the modern-day debate: What’s the difference between Astroturf and Artificial Grass. This event marked the start of the widespread use of artificial grass in sports arenas.
